When can I add more fish?

Post  idonotknowaboutfish on Thu Feb 16, 2012 6:28 am

Hi! I have recently set up my 46L edge. After water testing I was then advised I could go ahead and buy some fish. I have decided I want quite a varied mixture and it was suggested that should go for the hardy type as I do not know much about keeping them. I bought three diamond head tetras and I was told to let them adjust to their new surroundings before buying more.
My question is how long before I can buy some more? Without any doubt, I eventually want to buy a Siamese fighting fish and probably some guppys as they look so colourful.
Any advice? I appologise in advance for my ignorance. Trust me though, I am ready to learn.
Thankyou in anticipation of any replies.

Hi,

I don't know if you have your own test kit already, but something like the API Freshwater Master Kit is necessary to properly keep an eye on Ammonia, Nitrite and Nitrate.

You need to cylcle a tank for 3-6 weeks to allow benficial bacteria (BB) to breed, before adding fish. BB eats ups the Ammonia and Nitrite. If you add fish too early they will suffer and die. Here's a good site for info on cycling a tank.... http://www.fishkeeping.co.uk/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=559&forum=14.

Alternatively, you could add one or two fish after only a week or so to set the Cycle process in motion, but in the long run it's quicker and safer to do fishless cycling. However, I see you alreeady have fish so you're probably going to do the later....so get a test kit today!

A Siamese Fighting Fish needs good care and careful selection of tank mates, see here... http://www.fishkeeping.co.uk/modules/caresheets/caresheet.php?caresheetID=82

Here's a great website for all thing fish .... http://www.practicalfishkeeping.co.uk/

All the best,

Ricky

Thank you very much for your time consuming reply. I really appreciate it. Yes, I have a lot to learn. When I bought the tank, the fish shop told me to come back with sample of water. When I did return a week later, they then told me it was fine, so that is why I ended up buying there and then.
So am I correct in saying that if I go back with more water to test and they once again tell me its ok to buy, I trust them, and go ahead and buy a couple more.

Hi,

The only person you can really trust is youself ;~) I'd listen politely to what the shop has to say, but make your own mind up....and you can do that with this.... http://www.amazon.co.uk/API-Freshwater-Master-Test-Kit/dp/B000255NCI You might pay bit more in your local fish shop (lfs) for the kit but at least you can get one today and it helps keep them in business.

It takes about 20 mins to do a test, but its worth it and at least you know the little fellas aren't swimming about in too much of their own sewage.

Folks also usually add a dechlorinator to their tap water. Make sure you use the water from the drinking water tap.

All for now,

Ricky.
